There is one thing you can say with confidence about the development team behind Security by CleanTalk plugin: they sure like to keep their support staff busy!
A problem was recently identified with version 2.183 of this plugin. To be honest, this problem was likely already there long before now, but the duplicate queries problem was discovered only recently thanks to the fantastic Query Monitor plugin.
A few days after the problem got reported, the development folks at CleanTalk released a test version . The file was titled “security-malware-firewall-SQL-OPTIMIZATI”, and was labelled as version 2.182.99-dev.
If you weren’t paying attention to the latest release version being 2.183, this new version has a lower version number than the patched version released for testing. That is important for a reason.
Those folks who keep their WordPress sites updated, in many cases updates are performed automatically within hours after an update is available, know that an older version is automatically overwritten by a newer version.
Instead of being proactive (also known as “thinking”) and versioning the plugin with something like 2.183.1, the development folks instead named it 2.182.99-dev. Yep, you guessed it, the next update overwrote the version that fixed the original problem. The duplicate queries problem returned.
It never ceases to amaze me just how damn dumb some of these development teams are. No one with a brain must be checking what they are doing at CleanTalk before releasing code to the public. If even one brain cell was used, someone almost certainly would have caught this before it was released.
